HOLLY

“Horses give me something else to focus on rather than my physical and mental health which really helps me.”

Age 19
Day Student Year 3

“Looking after horses with different health needs has helped me understand my diabetes. “

Holly came to The Fortune College three years ago as a day student. She would have preferred to be residential but was unfortunately unable to secure funding. Although she feels at times she misses out on some of the independent learning she has not let it stop her.

Holly started riding at the age of 9 after a suggestion from her physiotherapist to help her with cerebral palsy.  Holly has an infinity with all animals and can, in fact, be nervous around horses at times. However, she has overcome her nerves and particularly enjoys all aspects of horse care, from grooming to mucking out.

Holly has had to overcome many challenges during her time at Fortune College. Physically, she has learnt to carry out tasks one-handed – even plaiting tails! She has overcome a lack of confidence and learnt to ask for help and express herself.

Holly has also achieved a Level 2 in both maths and English Functional Skills. Holly credits these achievements to  “this place not letting you give up”.

KEY OUTCOMES

When Holly first arrived at the centre, she was struggling emotionally following the death of a friend. She found that the horses helped her open up and come to terms with her grief. The first time she spoke to a staff member about her feelings, she did so in the presence of one of the horses. She couldn’t see the staff member and so was able to pretend she was talking to the horse alone. Many of our students, including Holly, have noted that the horses are excellent listeners and help them manage their emotions.

Holly left the College in September 2024. She has an assisted living space and is most excited about her apprenticeship in dog grooming she is undertaking. She says she will miss her friendship groups but is really looking forward to living independently and starting her new life. She is proud of everything she has achieved.
