As we waved goodbye to our 2025 leavers this summer, we did so with great pride and affection. Each student has travelled their own remarkable journey with us – developing confidence, life skills and independence through their work with our horses and their learning in everyday life.
Our annual Leavers Survey gives students a chance to reflect on their time at Fortune College, and this year’s responses were full of warmth, honesty and pride in how far they’ve come.

Growing in Confidence
Many students spoke about how much their confidence had grown since joining us:
“When I first started, I felt shy and had no confidence.”
Through the supportive environment of Fortune College, and the therapeutic work with our horses, students learned to believe in themselves – whether through riding, vaulting, or taking part in group activities. One student summed it up beautifully:
“Building my confidence with the horses.”

The Horses and Hands-On Learning
The horses, as always, were at the heart of their experience. When asked what they enjoyed most, the answers were almost unanimous – riding, grooming, vaulting, and simply being around the horses. Students also valued the variety of activities, shopping trips, and weekends spent together, with one student adding:
“I’ve made friends here which is really nice for me because I didn’t have friends before here.”
That sense of connection – both with the animals and with one another – is what makes Fortune College such a special place.

Friendship and Belonging
The theme of friendship ran strongly throughout this year’s feedback. For some, this was the first time they had felt truly accepted and understood.
“Made lifelong friends.” “I didn’t have friends before here.”
We are so proud that our college offers not just learning, but a real sense of belonging and community.

Life Skills and Preparation for the Future
Students also reflected on what they found challenging – early mornings, timetable changes, or learning to adapt to group life. These challenges became opportunities for growth, helping them build resilience and flexibility. As one student shared:
“Sometimes there are changes to my routine and my days which I get worried about, but it’s less now and I deal with this better.”
By the time they leave, most feel ready to move on – even if they don’t want to!
“I don’t want to leave. I feel safe and comfortable here.” “It’s gone too fast – learned lots.”
Student Voices for the Future
We always value our students’ ideas for improvement. This year’s suggestions were thoughtful and practical – from wanting more horse time, to quieter accommodation spaces, to fewer timetable changes. These insights help us continue shaping the college experience for future students.

A Fond Farewell
Saying goodbye is always bittersweet. While many students felt sad to leave, their comments remind us that they take much more with them than skills alone – they leave with confidence, friendships, and memories that will stay with them for life.
We wish each of our 2025 leavers every happiness and success in the next chapter of their journey. You’ll always be part of the Fortune College family.
